Mapping Transportation Emission Sources as Step of Jakarta Tackling Air Pollution

Jakarta Provincial Government releases newest report regarding results of mapping emission sources in the Jakarta transportation sector as part of a strategic effort to address air pollution.

The report is supported and submitted by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Clean Air Catalyst (CAC) initiative, implemented by WRI Indonesia. The report was prepared in collaboration with Puji Lestari from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) as the USAID CAC Co-Principal Investigator.

This report presents comprehensive information on the contribution of transportation and distribution sector emissions of pollutants such as particulates (PM10, PM2.5, and black carbon), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC).

Based on the study, heavy vehicles, especially trucks, are the largest contributors to particulate emissions (PM10, PM 2.5, and black carbon), NOx, and SO2. While motorcycles contribute more to CO and NMVOC emissions.

The study also analyzes the impact of various control scenarios in Jakarta covering five administrative regions. The control scenarios include the implementation of Euro IV fuel standards, the adoption of electric vehicles, and the use of diesel particulate filters (DPFs).

As a result, the implementation of the Euro IV fuel standard is projected to be able to reduce pollutant emissions such as PM10 and PM2.5 by up to 70 percent by 2030. This reduction will contribute to improve public health, especially in reducing the number of respiratory diseases and cardiovascular diseases which are higher in urban areas.

Jakarta Regional Secretary's Assistant of Development and Environment, Afan Adriansyah Idris, said the cooperation is part of joint commitment between Jakarta Provincial Government and WRI Indonesia.

He added that the study provides fundamental information that is essential for understanding the sources of pollution in Jakarta and will form the basis for developing targeted pollution control policies.

"Jakarta is more prepared to handle air pollution in the future based on this data," he said, Monday (10/14).

He emphasized the importance of Jakarta's vision as a city that continues to develop towards global city status, Jakarta is expected to be able to balance economic growth with efforts to maintain environmental quality.

"Concrete and sustainable solutions must be presented to address the problem of air pollution, and this collaboration is a strategic step towards a greener and healthier Jakarta for future generations," he added.

Jakarta Environment Agency Head, Asep Kuswanto, admitted concrete steps have been made to reduce air pollution in Jakarta.

According to him, the agency has added more air quality control station that can be accessed real time through udara.jakarta.go.id. Also expanding periodic vehicle emission testing, and increasing supervision of industries that have the potential to pollute the environment.

"We are also preparing to expand the low emission zone to significantly reduce air pollution," Asep admitted.

WRI Indonesia Air Quality Program Manager and Clean Air Catalyst Project Manager, Satya Utama said, this report is important in supporting more comprehensive policies for controlling air pollution.

According to him, the data provided from this study creates a clearer picture of the challenges of air pollution in Jakarta, especially from the transportation sector. He added, this is a concrete effort to reduce emissions, especially from the transportation sector for better air quality.

"In addition to help design more environmentally friendly transport policies, this report will also support efforts to improve the quality of public health, and support support efforts for residents living in areas with high levels of pollution," he stated.
